Some of the information is speculative, as indicated in the footnotes, and some of comes from genealogical websites, rather than from original certificates. ✝ Note: details of the Somers family are uncertain, because there are few records, because the family constantly re-used names and because of the flexibility with which variants of names were used within families in eighteenth century Scotland eg Claud/Claude/Claudius.

*  Note: The parentage of William Loudon is assumed for the purpose of this fictionalised biography, based on historical conjecture about John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun, and his known relationships with various mistresses. William Loudoun’s tomb is embellished with the Loudoun family’s coat of arms.
