Middlethorpe Hall Hotel

Built in 1699, Middlethorpe Hall stands in 20 acres of gardens and parkland. The grounds are made up of a network of small gardens that have been carefully restored and replanted. The large Victorian walled kitchen garden has an attractive double herbaceous border, box edged beds, herb beds, fruit trees and a brick dovecote covered in Azara microphylla and Clematis. The rose garden is surrounded by a yew hedge and has a lavender-lined stone path. Next to the walled kitchen garden, there is a white garden planted with Agapanthus campanulatus albus and Wisteria floribunda. The original garden wall has been transformed into a ha-ha planted with scented shrubs. There is an ornamental lake surrounded by alders, willows and dogwood. Middlethorpe also has some old and interesting trees: a Turkey Oak, Lebanon Cedar, red oak, Wellingtonia and Spanish chestnut. Gardens to visit while staying at Middlethorpe Hall Hotel include Harewood House Garden (22 miles), Castle Howard (22 miles) and Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens (27 miles).
