The Palitana temples are a pilgrimage site (tirtha) of great importance to the Jain community. There are over 1300 marble temples on the Shatrunjaya Hills. Every Jain should come here at least once as part of the journey to Nirvana. The layout and design of the temples shows great sensitivity to the landscape. Like Hindus and Buddhists, Jains associate the gods with mountain scenery.
