North Devon has a high and rugged coast but the gardens inland enjoy sheltered sites and woodland surroundings. Endsleigh Cottage was one of Humphrey Repton’s favourite design projects and as Loudon wrote ‘We admire Endsleigh exceedingly, for its natural beauties, and for the very high keeping displayed in all that we saw’.
A cottage orné, designed by Jeffry Wyatville, with a garden designed by Humphry Repton in 1811. It was one of Repton's last projects before his carriage accident - and one of his favorites. The garden, which has a grass terrace overlooking the Tamar, is being restored. There is a landscape transition from a 'beautiful' foreground, through a 'picturesque' middleground to a 'sublime' background (using these terms in their eighteenth century senses). Repton praised Wyatville's us.....

The garden was made by Lady Anne Palmer and a master plan was produced by Elizabeth Banks Associates Landscape Architects, in 1990. Lady Palmer (who was related to Horace Walpole) described the garden ‘dull and labour intensive, typically Victorian with a great use of annuals in beds around the house.’ When living in Spain she had become interested in gardening and formed a plant collection at Rosemoor. When the RHS took over the garden in 1988 they commissioned a new design which was a 'formal garden' with 'informal' in the beds. Lady Anne’s garden, also 'informal' was retained.

A Victorian gothic house, designed by William Burges. It was furnished with an arboretum and a terrace during the nineteenth century, in a gardenesque spirit. When inherited by the conservative politician, Sir John Heathcote-Amory, work began on planting up the terrace and the woodland with flowering plants. The terrace was also embellished. One yew enclosure was given a circular pool with a white statue and a Silver Weeping Pear. Another was planted by Graham Stuart .....

A twentieth century castle, designed by Edwin Lutyens for a millionaire businessman. George Dillistone helped with the garden design. It was a picturesque conception: a dramatic site, a castellated building and Reptonian terraces. But it is a chilly place and one cannot help remembering that Lutyens did not like spending time in gardens. It's a source of regret that Gertrude Jekyll was not on hand to advise him on the planting. But the National Trust has done a good job of furnis.....
