North Devon has a high and rugged coast but the gardens inland enjoy sheltered sites and woodland surroundings. Endsleigh Cottage was one of Humphrey Repton’s favourite design projects and as Loudon wrote ‘We admire Endsleigh exceedingly, for its natural beauties, and for the very high keeping displayed in all that we saw’. Mrs Olga Polizzi purchased Endsleigh and opened it as a private hotel in August 2005. A cottage orné, designed by Jeffry Wyatville, with a garden designed by Humphry Repton in 1811. It was a picturesque conception: a dramatic site, a castellated building and Reptonian terraces. But it is a chilly place and one cannot help remembering that Lutyens did not like spending time in gardens. He needed Gertrude Jekyll to advise him on how to make useful and beautiful outdoor space.
