Roofs and walls used to be designed merely for protection against the elements, the only 'bright spots' being windows and skylights. In future roofs and walls sould be designed for:

• energy production, using solar panels
• food production
• water management
• roof gardens
• wildlife conservation

These principles are illustrated with a wavy-roofed building, this shape being used as thank-you to Friedenreich Hundertwasser for his brilliant contribution to sustainable landscape architecture and building.

The underlying principle, as often in landscape architecture, is that landscape elements require multi-purpose design.
