Wickham Place Farm is a 14 acre garden with a 2 acre walled garden dating from 1706, knot garden, folly, pond and woodland. There is a 250 ft wisteria growing along the length of one of the walls, roses, climbers, perennials and bulbs.

Head Gardener's Comment

14 acres with something to interest everyone from artists to plantsmen/women and birdlovers to garden designers. The garden has evolved over three centuries and its history can be seen in the buildings, trees and plants. The intricate knot garden containing 720 box plants is an inspiration for many. Many plant combinations could be copied into the smallest garden.

History

From 1706 the 2 acre walled garden was built as the kitchen garden to the adjoining Wickham Place. In the 1940's the walled garden and further 12 acres was sold. Since 1987 the current owner has created the gardens as seen today.

Plants of Note

The 250' wisteria sinensis is stunning during May and draws flocks of visitors and photographers. A further 4 huge wisterias on all four aspects spread the flowering time over several weeks. At the same time the woodland is carpeted with bluebells and masses of ferns unfurl among them. June and July are the time for roses, summer bulbs and ground covering perennials. September the woodland is again carpeted, but with delicate cyclamen among autumn leaves. Colchicums are then a feature in the walled garden.

I love visiting Wickham Place Farm, especially when the Wisteria are out, or in the early autumn when the cyclamen show a massed display in the woods.

I also love the mulberry tree and some of the unusual plants like Vestia which looks similar to box then surprises you with yellow flowers.

There are some pretty aquilegias, and plenty of unusual plants to be seen.

The owner, Judith, is always very welcoming, too.

It's well worth a visit or several.
