Vanderbilt Italian Garden in Hyde Park

Gardenvisit Editorial

The Vanderbilt Estate in Hyde Park is a good example of a rich man's estate, with views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains. The Italian Gardens are in three parts: the annual garden, the perennial garden, and the rose garden. The cherry tree walk and the pool garden were restored in 1986. The original garden was designed in the early 1800's by the Belgian garden architect Andre Parmentier, when the estate belonged to Dr. David Hosack. Frederick Vanderbilt bought the estate in 1895 and added the rose garden, pools and statuary, and greenhouses.
