Samuel J. Untermyer was a prominent and highly successful Jewish New York lawyer and the first American lawyer to earn a million dollar fee for a single case. He was also greatly interested and knowledgable about horticulture. Untermyer purchased the estate in 1899 and had ambitions for it to become the greatest garden in the world. It is a great example of American Beaux Arts design by Welles Bosworth.
