The Hill Garden

A fine example of the period 1910-1925, with a unique atmosphere of mellowed classicism. The Pergola Walk, linking the formal gardens of the main house and the more gentle lawns of the lower garden is the main feature. The dramatic contrast between the towering trees of West Heath and exotic plants climbing the graceful Pergola offers a unique experience. The fill for the Walk was obtained from the Northern Line excavations. Designed by Thomas Mawson for Lord Leverhulme. Mawson was the first designer to use the term Arts and Crafts in connection with a style of garden design and The Hill exemplifies the Italian phase of Arts and Crafts garden design in England.
