The original late gothic palace was destroyed and replaced in the sixteenth century with a Renaissance palace and walled court garden. It became the residence of the rulers of Bavaria. There is a wonderful view of the Bavarian Alps from the garden.

This really lovely though small and plain garden in an almost bucolic easy-going ambiance (there's a cafe, a childrens playground and a Biergarten) is one of my local favourites. When you walk up through the old country town center up to the site on a hill high above the plains in front of the alps foothills, with that fantastic view across Munich all along the alpine range you realize it must have a very very long history. And that's quite a surprise when you grew up with only the one dreadful meaning of "Dachau".
