On the steep slopes of an end moraine erosion ditch called “dead mans rill” beyond Amerangs 900yo castle senior Baron Krafft von Crailsheim has planted trees from all over the world. Beginning in the 1960s, he planted a 100 trees on 7 acres. Recently the area has been made accessible to the public. You stroll along a romantic creek, pass parts of a forest that has not been touched for decades. A giant chair and other features point out local handcraft specialities. A main idea of the arboretum is how different trees cope with climate change in this Bavarian region. The path then ascends to Schloss Amerang.
On the site you also find a teaching orchard. It is meant to be a model for orchards in the house garden.
Finally be sure not to miss out on the fabulous summer concerts in the court yard with classic, folk and jazz performances! Its acoustic properties are astonishing.
Though Bavarian Hofmark castles traditionally did not have a large park, one could easily imagine one around this lovely castle...
