Watching the animals (and people) here can be a distraction, but the zoo's mesas and canyons also hold a world-class botanic garden with over 700,000 plants. In recent years there has been a trend to create bioclimes of plants and animals such as the Arctic tundra (complete with polar bears) and Tiger River's Asian rain forest. Fern Canyon is a particular favorite of mine, offering a peaceful path down a small side canyon that's shady and cool on the hottest days.
