Having made his money in the circus, John Ringling and his wife Mable purchased 20 acres of land on the waterfront in Sarasota in 1911. They built a Venetian Gothic mansion, known as the Cà d’Zan (meaning "House of John") and a Museum of Art to house their private collection. The Mable Ringling Rose Garden was completed in 1913 - you can see its circular layout if you zoom in on the location map below. The estate is now run by Florida State University.
