Pencarrow Garden

A Palladian house (1760) with a Victorian garden designed by the owner after 1831. It has terraces, a fountain, a rock garden, an ice house, an Italian garden, a lake and a woodland garden. The gardens and woods were designed by Sir William Molesworth and have a rich collection of specimen conifers, rhododendrons and camellias, a rockery and a lake. 'Monkey puzzle' (as a name for Araucaria araucana) originated here when a visitor commented that 'It would puzzle a monkey to climb that'. Sir William planned the South Drive as as a picturesque approach to the house. Specimen trees were grown from seed collected by Douglas, Lobb, and Hooker. The approach to planting design is thoroughly Gardenesque. and JC Loudon is known to have helped the estate with tree identifications (by correspondence).
