Gardenvisit Editorial

Niagara Parks' Botanical Gardens were established in 1936 and are beautifully maintained by students at the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture. Canada is one of the world's leading countries for formal bedding and this is a great place to see the art perfected. One can imagine that Queen Victoria still rules an empire on which the sun never sets. The climate is part of the explanation for Canada's continuing love affair with carpet bedding. Bedding plants can be brought on in hothouses and planted out to soak up the summer heat. Niagara Parks' Botanical Gardens also has a Butterfly Conservatory and collections of herbaceous perennials, rhododendrons, azaleas, shade plants, herbs and vegetables.

I visited at the end of a long, hard winter, so the gardens had not yet come to life, but I rank this as a 5* garden because of the magnificent Butterfly Conservatory, which is open throughout the year.
Thousands of butterflies to be seen here, in a magnificent tropical rain forest setting - and definitely worth visiting whatever the weather or season - it has enormous appeal for both adults and children!
