There is so much to the house, it is hard to take it all in. Read up on it first, it's the only way to travel. If history is hard for you, buy the kids' books in the shop--get the most out of the house, courtyards and garden. The history is everything. From the walled garden, you can see the original part of the house on the east, where the sunken garden used to be, now a family swimming pool. As Vita said, the NE corner is somber, massive, irregular--the nucleus of Knole (can't get close though--maybe ask someone!). Herbs, cutting garden, the beautiful rugged Kentish wall, with flowering vines; formal and wild, old apple orchard, grasses, allees and long views--I loved it.

Its mad, mad, mad that the house and the garden are open on different days of the week. But since the garden is hardly worth visiting, perhaps it does not matter. Luckily, the deer park is wonderful

Knole is an amazing house and I would give the house tour 4 stars, but the garden is only open very occasionally, as the family still uses it. We were not there at the right day to see the garden, so could only look through the gates. The deer park area is lovely to walk through and it was fun feeding the deer.
