Gardenvisit Editorial

The original nineteenth century gardens were created for the workers of Kilver Court. The gardens were restored in the 1960s and opened to the public for the first time in 2008. There is a parterre, millpond and boating lake.

History

Kilver Court Gardens was first created by Ernest Jardine, MP of East Somerset, in 1880 and established what was known as ‘Jardine’s Park’, using the mill ponds as a boating lake and the surrounding gardens for the workers recreation. Fruit and vegetables were also grown to provide mid-day meals for the workers- a vegetable garden has newly been reinstated!

Having returned to the area after 20 years I was bothsurprised and delighted to find Kilver Gardens. I remember the property formerly owned by Babycham in the '60's. I never imagined there was such a wonderful wonderland secretly ensconsed behind those walls.

A wonderful treat. Well worth a visit Tourists!

What a marvellous find. A spectacular backdrop of old railway viaduct, with amazing waterfalls running into a lake. The planting is well planned and thought about and the whole garden has a wonderfully peaceful and romantic feel to it. I wish I was getting married again! Instead I have arranged a garden tea party for my parents golden wedding anniversary in the spring, even if the British weather lets us down there are lovely wood panelled rooms overlooking the gardens. This really is the perfect venue!

After hearing about Kilver Court through a friend, I thought I would take my parents there for a treat. It was delightful. Even in the cold weather it is a stunning garden. The Viaduct is a masterpiece backdrop. The Snowdrops peering were a delight.
The cafe and shop are relaxed and comfortable, with an open log fire in the cafe to warm us after offers a unique feel.
Lunch was delicious, with a home made feel about it all. The risotto was warming and very tasty, my parents stuck with the soup, which looked and they say was delicious too!
I spoke to one of the waitresses who informed me that they now have a wedding license, and what could be better with the gardens for photos and a great atmosphere! - we'll definately be back later in the year to enjoy it all again.

I had the most wonderful experience at Kilver Court-as the website says it is truly Somerset's best kept secret! Even in these cold winter days, it was still an inspiring experience. The log fire in the Cafe afterwards, brought us up to temperature where we had the most delicious cream tea-what a treat!
