Kaliadeh Palace

In 1485 the sultans of Mandu built a pleasure palace on an island in the Shipra River. It fell into decay and now contains a Hindu temple. The glory of the place is the water garden set on the bed of a river. It has the seclusion which belongs to sunken gardens and the vital sense of place associated with water gardens. In terms of location, the nearest European comparisons are Chantilly and Studley Royal. In an Indian context the geometry of the paths between the water tanks gives a plan kinship with a charbagh. The tanks are inline with the flow of the River Shipra. We may have to wait a while, but one day the Kaliadeh Palace will be a significant tourist attraction.
