The original Palacio Cristal was built for the International Show in 1865 and the gardens were designed by German landscape architect Emílio David. The building itself was destroyed in the 1950s and has now been replaced by a modern dome complex used for sport, but the beautiful gardens survive. The hilltop location overlooking the River Douro gives fantastic views of the city.
