The botanic garden was founded in 1874 and specialises in trees and shrubs (rather than herbaceous plants). It is a quiet refuge in central Lisbon.

I was there at the beginning of June this year. It is small comparing to other botanic gardens I have visited, but unique in that it is built on a slope that goes down to the Liberty Ave from the University, kinda like a leafy short cut. Few visitors ventures there, and on an early summer evening it is an island of calm in the middle of the noisy city. Also it dotted with wonderfully weird modern sculptures, making it an outdoor gallery as well. For that I think it worths the price one pays to get in.
