Hill Close Gardens are an interesting group of hedged gardens, designed to be used and enjoyed by the shopkeepers and professional people who did not have space for gardens adjoining their homes - because they lived over their businesses. The gardens are enclosed by hedges and many of them had a summer house which could be used for an evening or weekend meal. The idea is similar to that of the 'kline garten' as found in other North European gardens.
