George G. Frelinghuysen married Sara Ballantine in 1881 and they commissioned Rotch and Tilden to design a summer home (named Whippany Farm) in a Colonial Revival style.Their daughter was a keen gardener and in 1964 set about turning the estate into an arboretum. The old garden and the arboretum are now maintained by the Township and volunteers.
