Flamengo Park is still famous and popular - but most of Burle Marx's brilliant design was destroyed by highway engineers. It began as a landfill operation, which created a lagoon and beach. The idea of making a park came from the landscap designer Carlota de Macedo Soares, a friend of the state governor. It was designed by  Burle Marx, for sports including football, tennis, volleyball, basketball.
