Head Gardener's Comment

From traditional beds to naturalistic plant collections integrated with their wild forest surrounds, the botanic garden covers 28 hectares.

The flat lower garden includes a winter garden glasshouse, alpine house, cafe and information centre. A collection of camellias and herbaceous borders complement the formal herb garden and rose garden.

Up the hill is an aviary housing New Zealand native birds and others. The nearby Geographic Plant Collection displays plants from around the world. New Zealand native plants have their own collection and the Rhododendron Dell attracts visitors from around the world in spring.

History

The first botanic garden in New Zealand, it was established in 1863. Plant collections are still being added with the most recent addition being the Mediterranean Garden.
