A modern botanical garden on the east bank of the Des Moines River, with a geodesic dome conservatory (visible on the satellite image on the map below). The Botanical Center was completed in 1979.
The Des Moines Botanical center is a wonderful place to escape the Iowa winters and spend a few hours in the tropics -- all without a plane ticket. The interior is filled with exotic plant materials from various warmer parts of the globe, as well as seasonal displays. There are horticultural and educational programs offered nearly every week. And the 14 acres of exterior grounds are beautiful and enjoyable during the more temperate months. Admission to the interior dome is $5 for adults, well worth the experience.
On a personal note, I was married in the Botanical Center in 1998, so the place holds pleasant personal memories for me.
If you find yourself in Des Moines, the Botanical Center is well worth a visit.
