Beman and Bertie Gates Dawes bought the land in 1917 and began to transform their farm into what is now Dawes Arboretum. It has various collections, including a Japanese Garden designed by Makoto Nakamura in 1963, and a beautiful Cypress Swamp with a boardwalk.
