Gardenvisit Editorial

The oldest part of the garden (The Island) was designed by Ruth Hansen, a landscape architect and a member of the Portland Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society. A later section of the garden (The Peninsula) was designed by Wallace K. Huntington (a Portland landscape architect) in 1977. The garden now has over 2,500 rhododendrons and azaleas. They are at their best in spring and early summer.

Crystal Springs is my favorite Portland Garden. This garden feels like an oasis in the city. The garden borders a small lake with a golf course on the other side, so there is no intrusion urban surrounds. This is a pleasant garden to walk, with shaded and sunny paths that intertwine, and lead you to various views of the water features. We especially enjoy the Mother's Day event, when the rhododendrons are in bloom. These are Rhododendrons the way they should be, bold and beautiful in an evergreen understory.
