The park is well worth a visit despite being rather lightly cared for. The formal gardens have wonderful lines of pleached trees but little else. Such modern planting as there is is rather poor

What a peculiar place ! It has all the makings of being rather splendid but it all peters out once you are beyond the original landscape works. The more modern landscaping is poorly designed and rather underfunded in its planting... it retains some worth in that there was some extensive and notable design in earlier centuries ,the lake, surrounding woodlands etc etc. My impression is that it needs a lot of money thrown at it to get it up to par and then a sensible budget provided to keep it in good order..at the moment it looks starved of dosh !
