Caerhays Castle Garden

One of the great woodland gardens in the picturesque/gardenesque style, specialising in magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons. The house was designed by John Nash in 1805 and the garden took on its present form after 1896. The Williams family, who still own the garden, sponsored several famous plant collectors. Nash worked in partnership with Repton and Repton's son was employed by Nash. It is not known whether Humphry gave advice on Caerhays but his spirit seems stronger here than in any of the parks he is known to have designed. Repton thought Picturesque architecture, and the castle style especially suited to rugged sites. He loved to have shelter from a hill behind the house. Nothing pleased him more than a terrace with an animated foreground and a sublime view (of the sea at Caerhays).
