George Douglas (or Quaker Oats) hired OC Simmonds, the landscape architect, to re-design the garden. He added added a pond, formal gardens, vegetable and cutting gardens. The character is broadly English but the house and the garden look slightly larger than they would be in England.

The formal garden originally installed in 1910. Still laid out and planted similarly as it was then featuring geometric shaped beds and planted in an English country garden style as was popular on country estates at the turn of the century. The entire 26 acre estate is very similar as was originaly designed and implemented by regional prairie landscape designer Ossian Cole Simonds beginning in 1909. The grounds and gardens are open and free to the public, numerous garden and grounds tours are available with reservations.
