Bodhgaya

Bodhgaya, the place of enlightenment, is the centre of the Buddhist world: the ancient city is where Gautama Buddha attained nirvana (Enlightenment). It became the site of a monastery of which the most significant surviving element is the Mahabodhi Temple, beside the Bodhi (Enlightenment) Tree, a specimen of Ficus religiosa.  After reaching the state of Enlightenment the Buddha travelled to Sarnath and began his teaching.
