Gardenvisit Editorial

A contemporary garden with a blue house as a backdrop - Blå Huset means "Blue House". There is also a nursery specialising in perennials.

Head Gardener's Comment

Blå Huset Open Garden is a stimulating contemporary garden, a committed plant lover’s oasis filled with creativity and fun.

History

The garden is 8 years old and of two completely different natures. Half (the shady garden) is planted on what once was a rundown private residence's garden. The other half is planted in the ruins of an old industrial building. In this section, the pathways are the old concrete floor of the demolished building and the planting is done around the edges of the concrete floor, in holes in the concrete floor and cellar holes. This section is in full sun and planted with drought tolerant plants.

Plants of Note

Half of the garden is planted with drought resistant perennials and shrubs. Lots of hydrangea, heuchera and peonies both bush and tree fill the other half of the garden.

We have visited the garden at Bla Huset twice over the last 4 years on separate trips to Sweden and this garden is well worth a visit. I would rate it one of the best garden on Osterlen and the proprietors are friendly and obviously care very much for the garden and promoting Swedish garden culture. At our last visit they had also opened their garden boutique and this is well worth browsing through - they offer lots of interesting and unusual gardening tools, accessories and mementos. We will endeavour to visit each time we're in the area to see what new things the owners have in store.

This garden is a true oasis, and has something for everyone. The passionate plant lover will enjoy the many varieties (from shade loving plants to those that love full sun and everything in between), the kids will love the quirky touches (gnome conferences, trees with hidden houses, ponds with fish) and those just seeking a quiet stroll through beautiful surroundings will all get their fill! Highly recommended!
