Gardenvisit Editorial

This property was the home of Bethlehem's first minister, the Reverend Joseph Bellamy. It became a summer house in 1912 and the garden was designed in 1915. The wife of the owner (Ferriday) designed the garden to resemble an Aubusson carpet. It is geometrical with box hedging and infill planting.

History

A property of Connecticut Landmarks, the Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden was the 18th century home of Reverend Joseph Bellamy, a prominent colonial minister. Transformed into an early 20th century summer residence by the Ferriday family of New York City, the property features American antiques, historic barns and outbuildings, and an archival center with civil war letters. The landscape boasts a circa 1915 formal garden, collections of peonies, lilacs and roses, as well as unusual specimen plants. Also available are a gift shop and an on-going sale of plants, many propagated from the 1915 garden.
