Go to Avery Hill Park

another visit to Avery Hill to try out the new cafe and to see the newly cleaned statue in The Pond Room. Cafe is very pleasent with a good range of food and cakes on offer. Staff were pleasent and polite. Today was raining but it was nice to be able to sit outside under a covered area and watch the rain.

Now only The Pond Room is open as the rest is well under redevelopment, ahead of time!

The Pond Room looks really nice and the statue magnificient!

I took some pics which you can see on my Flickr account

It is very nice to have a cafe in the park again. But why didn't they use part of the Winter Garden as a cafe? It seems to be in a near-permanent state of repair and to have no real use. I can see the room overlooking the 'Rose Garden' as a wonderful day time cafe and evening restaurant - like they have in Holland Park.

so pleased to visit again and see the Winter Garden open once again. Work is well on the way to completion and theyve ever discovered a old tunnel leading out into the garden with underground rooms for growing mushrooms. Hope that will be open for the public once its made safe.

The University of Greenwich has appointed a firm of landscape architects (Weddle Landscape Design)to restore the conservatory and its plants. A new heating system will be installed and the old irrigation system (using not-too-alkaline rainwater) will be restored. It is hoped that the works will be completed in 2009.

the Winter Garden is permantly closed at the moment. The plants are dying. The heating system has failed and is apparently too expensive to be fixed! Ive been looking to see if anyone ie Greenwich council or university are doing anything about trying to save the plants before its too late and reparing the heating so as to allow the winter garden to reopen
contact me on A1lady@a1councilexchange.co.uk if you know anything.

The winter gardens have def seen better days. took my daughter there on sat but found it was closed we got there at 2.15 no one to be seen. Grafitti scrawled all over the doors and the walls and looking through all this the inside looked like it could do with a bit more man power to bring it back to life.

It would really be a nice place but seems to have been a bit neglected, not trying to be horrible it must be a big job but i think just needs more hands to get it nice.

Signage is a bit lacking as i have never been there before i had to ask people how to find it. there is only 1 sign as you enter the park then thats it.

I wonder if there is a scheme whereby we could offer a few hours a week to bring it back to life.

The Cafe, it turns out, is a porta cabin in the field which has one of the maddest paint jobs ive ever seen. not exactly what i was expecting but i suppose it does the job.

All in all not a place i would rush back to as a visitor but would like to have a go helping to clean it up.

    Real shame really.
